Greek Vocabulary that will be on the test
1. City-State – a city that forms an independent state.
2. Colony – a group of people who leave their native land to form a new settlement.
3. Mythology – a group of myths that tell about history, heroes, and gods.
4. Homer – blind Greek poet that wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey.
5. Paris – the Prince of Troy that kidnapped Helen.
6. Helen – the most beautiful woman ever who caused the Trojan Wars.
7. Iliad – the epic poem about the Trojan Wars.
8. Odyssey – epic poem about Ulysses 10 year journey back to Greece.
9. Dark Ages – no progress in knowledge and learning.
10. Sparta – Greek city-state that focused on physical strength and war. The state owned and controlled everything.
11. Athens – Greek city-state that focused on arts, education, and democracy.
12. Philosophy – study that uses logic and reason to investigate the universe, society, and morality.

21. Persian Empire – great empire that fought against the Greeks until finally defeated by Alexander the Great.
22. Hellenistic- language, art, science, and literature of the Greek culture spread through the conquering of Alexander the Great.
23. Assimilation – the adoption of the conqueror’s culture.
24. Alexander the Great – Macedonian student of Aristotle that conquered most of the known world.
25. Western Civilization – the modern culture of Europe and North America.

Today was our introduction to World Civilizations.
We reviewed all the rules of our class.
